Everyone always asks me "what is the best time of day to have photos done". My answer always is "2 hours before sunset". The reason why I like this time of day the best is for one, the sun isn't as high in the sky, thus resulting in less shadows. When the sun is it's brightest (mid-day), it tends to cast harsh shadows and it's hard to position subjects in a shaded spot without having the background be too bright. When shooting in the evening I am able to position my subjects with the sun directly behind them which helps with whats called backlighting. The sun is always warmer towards the end of the day and to me, gives richness to the subjects and surrounding areas. This family's photos were taken 30 minutes before sunset and you can see that the sun really warmed everything up and gave great backlighting.

Great colors. What presets do you use most frequently?
Melissa - I actually don't use any presets. I try to master the photo straight out of camera and then do some light editing, mainly to increase color & overall sharpen the image. When I first started out doing photography I would spend hours upon hours editing. Now I keep it as simple as possible. To me, less is more and it helps keep the image looking clean vs. over-processed. :)
